‘Appearance isn’t everything’. discuss.

The belief that appearance isn’t the be all and end all in society is often touted in advice columns of women’s magazines. however, to what extent do we really believe this and act upon it as if it were true? all the indications are, that we don’t, and this is reflected in society’s attitudes and behavior and in turn by the media. never before has society been so the image-obsessed and such value placed in outer attractiveness.

Ironically, society acknowledges how superficial it is to judge by appearance alone. ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’, and ‘ appearance can be deceptive’, are two well-known sayings that support this belief. in spite of this, we place enormous emphasis on physical beauty. often giving little thought to the person behind the external appearance. similar double standards are seen in women’s magazines that advice women that character count more than beauty whilst simultaneously featuring models that embody physical perfection.

If anyone is in any doubt that appearance is relatively unimportant, then look to statistics. those judged more physically attractive are typically higher wage earners than their less attractive counterparts. to add insult to injury, attractive people are also invariably deemed more intelligent irrespective of their actual intelligent quotient, according to psychologists.

The current striving for physical perfection is also indicative of society’s emphasis on beauty. a wealth of beauty clinics offering plastic surgery testify to this. whilst this obsession with bodily perfection does not necessarily indicate a greater emphasis placed on beauty over personality. it nevertheless indicates the value of beauty in contemporary society.

In conclusion, it can be seen, therefore, that appearance is regarded today as being as important, if not more so, than character, personality, and achievements. indeed, models and many celebrities rely on this being the case to win fame and fortune today. superficial as contemporary attitudes may be, we have to accept responsibility for the perpetuation of such attitudes. after all, if we didn’t buy into a belief system that rewards physical beauty with money and high regard, such superficial attitudes would soon cease to prevail.

In some countries, an increasing number of people are suffering from health problems as a result of eating too much fast food. it is, therefore, necessary for governments to impose a higher tax on this kind of food. to what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
