  EASY WAY TO LEARN ACTIVE PASSIVE PAST TENSE VOICE IN ENGLISH GRAMMAR

 

What is a voice?

             The voice of a verb tells whether the subject of the sentences performs or receives the action. There are two types of Voice:-

1.Active voice

2. Passive voice

Active voice:-     The subject performs the action expressed by the verb.

Passive voice:-  The subject receives the action expressed by the verb.

 

Rules of conversation from Active to passive:-

 

  1. Identify the subject, the verb, and the object.
  2. change the object into the subject.
  3. Put the suitable helping verb.
  4. Change the verb into past participle of the verb.
  5. Always add the preposition “by”.
  6. change the subject into the object.
  7. Always use the verb 3rd form in the passive voice

                       There are Eight types of Passive voice:-

 

1.Simple Present Tense

2. Present Continuous Tense

3. Present Present Tense

4. Simple Past Tense

5. Past Continuous Tense

6. Past perfect tense

7. Simple Future Tense

8. Future Perfect Tense

 

 

1.Simple Past Tense:- 

 

  Affirmative Tense Rule of Active voice:-

                                           subject+verb 2nd form+object.

 

  Affirmative Tense Rule of Passive voice:-

                                   Object+helping verb(was/were)+verb 3rd form+by+object.

 

Examples:-

Active voice:-           I drank a cup of coffee.

Passive voice:-       A cup of coffee was drunk by me.

Active voice:-         You surprised me.

Passive Voice:-     I was surprised by you.

 

                   Negative Tense- Rule of Active Voice:-

                                             subject+did not+ verb 1st form+object .

 

 Negative Tense- Rule of Passive Voice:-

                        object+Helping verb(was/were)+ verb 3rd form+ by+subject .

 Examples:- 

Active Voice:-       I  did not drink a cup of coffee.

Passive Voice:–     A cup of coffee was not drunk by me.

Active voice:-       Children did not play a video game.

Passive Voice:-    A video game was not played by children.

                      Interrogative Tense Rule of Active voice:-

                                                   Did +subject+verb 1st form+object+?

                                                  < Wh>+Did +subject+verb 1st form+object+?

                           <wh> family:- what, why, when, where, who, whom, whose, which, and how.

 

  Interrogative Tense Rule of passive voice:-

                               Helping verb(was/were) +object+verb 3rd form+by+subject+?

                            < Wh>+helping verb(was/were) +object+verb 3rd form+by+subject+?

                           <wh> family:- what, why, when, where, who, whom, whose, which, and how.

Examples:-

Active Voice:-     Did I drink a cup of coffee?

Passive Voice:-   Was a cup of coffee drunk by me?

Active voice:-     Did children play a video game?

Passive Voice:-  Was a video game played by children?

Active voice:-      Who killed the snake?

Passive Voice:-  By whom was the snake killed?

 

     Interrogative+ negative Tense Rule of active voice:-

                                     Did +subject+ not+verb 1st form+object+?

                                    < Wh>+Did+subject+ not+verb 1st form+object+?

                                           <wh> family:- what, why, when, where, who, whom, whose, which, and how.

 

 Interrogative+ negative Tense Rule of  Passive voice:-

                   Helping verb(was/were)+Object+ not+verb 1st form+by+subject+?

         < Wh>+Helping verb(was/were)+object+ not+verb1st form+by+subject+?

                                           <wh> family:- what, why, when, where, who, whom, whose, which, and how.

Examples:-

Active Voice:-     Did I not drink a cup of coffee?

Passive Voice:-   Was a cup of coffee not drunk by me?

Active voice:-     Did children not play a video game?

Passive Voice:-  Was a video game not played by children?

Active voice:-      Who not killed the snake?

Passive Voice:-    By whom was the snake not killed?

 

2. Past Continuous Tense:-

 

         Affirmative Tense Rule of Active Voice:- 

                             subject+was/were+verb 1st form+ ing +object.

 

        Affirmative Tense Rule of Passive Voice:- 

                            Object+was/were+ being+verb 3rd form+ by +Subject.

 

Use of “Was”:- The helping verb “was” is used with Singular ( such as Noun, He, She, It  ).

 Use of “were”:- The helping verb”were” is used with Plural (such as They, We, You).

 

Examples:-

Active Voice:-           I was drinking a cup of coffee.

Passive Voice:       A cup of coffee was being drunk by me.

Active voice:-           You were surprising me.

Passive Voice:-     I was being surprised by you.

 

 

              Negative Tense:- Rule of active voice:- 

                         subject+ was/were+ not +verb 1st form+ing +object.

 

           Negative Tense:- Rule of passive voice:- 

                             Object+ was/were+ not +being +verb 3rd form+by +subject.

Examples:-

Active voice:-               I was not drinking a cup of coffee.

Passive voice:-         A cup of coffee was not being drunk by me.

Active voice:-              You was not surprising me.

Passive Voice:-        I was not being surprised by you.

Examples:-

Active Voice:-           Was I not drinking a cup of coffee?

Passive Voice:-      Was a cup of coffee not being by me?

Active voice:-         Were you not helping me?

Passive Voice:-     Was I not being helped by you?

3. Past Perfect Tense:-

             Affirmative Tense Rule of Active Voice:- 

                                   subject+had+verb 3rd form +object.

             Affirmative Tense Rule of Passive Voice:- 

                                Object+had+been + verb 3rd form +by+subject.

 

Examples:-

Active Voice:-        I had finished my work.

Passive Voice:-     My work had been finished by me.

Active Voice: –      She had received my letter.

Passive Voice:-     My letter had been received by her.

                Negative Tense Rule of Active voice:- 

                           subject+ had+ not+verb 3rd form +object.

 

               Negative Tense Rule of Passive voice:- 

                              Object+ had+ not+been+verb 3rd form +by+Subject.

 

Examples:-

Active Voice:-        I had finished my work.

Passive Voice:-     My work had not been finished by me.
