Essay structure for Writing task 2 IELTS EXAM

 

Illustration example: Of all public transportation options, a metro is the most convenient way to get around a large city.  Write down an essay to support this statement.

1- Introduction: 
S1: Background Sentence about the topic.
Ex. Nowadays, there are various transportation means worldwide that are being used on a daily basis.
S2: Thesis (can be in the form of a question)
– Reword the main question word by word using synonyms.
Ex.: Is the underground, of all the public transport types, the easiest method to move around a sizeable
city?
S3: Outline sentence (Summary sentence)
– State your two main ideas with a conjunction.
Ex.: It is not only taking less time to move from one place to another on metro but also metro provides
higher degree of safety compared with other options.

2- Body Paragraph A:
S1: Reword the 1st main idea, which is mentioned in the outline sentence in the introduction, word
by word using synonyms.
Ex.: Underground rails have been proved to have more speed than other transportation means.
S2: One sentence of supporting information, which proves the 1st idea.
Ex.: They are faster because they have well defined schedules as well as not subject to delays.
S3: Put an example:
– Real life example (Not personalized)
– Facts (100% agreed on by all people)
– Statistics (Do not make them up)
Ex.: For instance, all metro stations are provided with screens of their time table including the arrival
time of the upcoming train.
S4: Summary sentence beginning with a linking device and shows how the idea if the whole
paragraph proves the thesis. (Both parts must be mentioned specifically in the sentence)
Ex.: Therefore, it is more efficient for people to use metro than busses or cars which are subjected to
traffic jam.

Ex.: The safety measures on subway are highly recognized than other options.
S2: One sentence of supporting information, which proves the 1st idea.
Ex.: They are well equipped to handle any kind of emergency.
S3: Put an example:

– Facts (100% agreed on by all people)
– Statistics (Do not make them up)
Ex.: To illustrate, every metro carriage has various evacuation methods including automatic doors and a
manual arm for emergency breaks.
S4: Summary sentence beginning with a linking device and shows how the idea if the whole
paragraph proves the thesis. (Both parts must be mentioned specifically in the sentence)
Ex.: Hence, it can be argued that due to the safety aspects of using the subway, it is the most suitable way
to commute around a large city.

 

4- Conclusion:
S1: a sentence starting with one of the following linking devices:
To sum up,
To summarize,
In summary,
In conclusion,
– If it is a personal opinion essay, write one of these expressions after the linking device:
from my point of view,
in my opinion,
I think/Believe that,
from my perspective,
Then reword the thesis as a statement (not as a question)
– If your opinion is not asked, go directly and reword the thesis as a statement (not as a question)
Ex.: To summarize, I believe that there isn’t any efficient public transportation method other than the
metro to move through cities.
S2: Reason for your answer as follows:
This is because (then reword the 2 main ideas word by word using synonyms)
Ex.: This is because underground subways are speedy and make the passengers feel safer than other
alternatives.
S3: The final sentence is a prediction or recommendations for the future based on the general topic
then justify it.
Start if with:
It can be predicted that …
It can be recommended that …
Ex. It can be predicted that governments will improve and extend the subways network in large cities
since most of the people depend on them to move from one place to another.

Important notes:
– Don’t put your opinion in the introduction unless you are asked to do so. Alternatively, mention it
in the conclusion as explained before.
– Do not use contractions or Idioms in the essay because they are informal.
– To achieve band 7, your essay must contain 3 or 4 complex/compound sentences and 12 linking
devices.
– You cannot have a sentence which contains both a linking device and a complex structure.
– Do not put two linking devices in one sentence.
Ex.
For example, all metro stations are provided with screens of their time table in addition to the
arrival time of the upcoming train. (This is wrong)
Instead, you can say:
For example, all metro stations are provided with screens of their time table including the arrival
time of the upcoming train.
– A simple sentence is with only one idea then a full stop OR two ideas with a conjunction.
– Sequencing devices such as firstly, secondly, lastly, … are used to sequence sentences inside a
single paragraph not to number paragraphs.
